GTM uses a container snippet installed once on your site. Inside the container you configure tags (what to fire), triggers (when to fire them), and variables (the data they use), then publish changes with version history and a preview mode for testing. It also supports server-side tagging, which routes data through your own server for more control and resilience.
Because GTM centralizes tracking, it's also where consent is enforced: tags can respect Google Consent Mode so analytics and advertising tags behave according to each visitor's choices. A clean, documented GTM container is the foundation of reliable conversion tracking.
Example
A marketing team adds a Meta Pixel lead event and a Google Ads conversion that fire on a form's thank-you page, testing both in GTM's preview mode before publishing.
How Sloss Digital uses it
We build and audit GTM containers for every client — documented, consent-aware, and tested — so conversion data is accurate before it ever reaches the ad platforms.
